New York City’s booming real estate development finally caught up with the beloved Antiques Garage. It operated its last shopping weekend on June 28-29…but never fear! Your favorite Garage vendors are now at the Chelsea Flea Market only half a block away from the Garage, between Sixth Avenue and Broadway, and Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market on West 39th Street at Ninth Avenue.
The Antiques Garage was an indoor expansion of the original “Chelsea fleas” that started in 1976 on an empty corner lot with 11 vendors. These markets have been vital to the cultural fabric of New York City, world-renowned and loved by locals and tourists alike, including cultural icons Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, Annie Leibovitz, Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei, Anne Hathaway, Brooke Shields, Donna Karan, Michael Jackson, Drew Barrymore, Barbara Streisand, Catherine Deneuve, Joanne Woodward, Bette Midler, Todd Oldham, Bill Cunningham among others.
A bastion of inspiration for the fashion coterie as well as artists, actors, designers, The Antiques Garage was a window into an era gone by, a fond trip down memory lane, and a wonderful treasure trove of discovery.
