Sontag & Cunningham at NYC's world-famous Annex antiques & flea markets

Chelsea Flea Market

Alan Boss, founder of the Annex Markets, recalls a weekend at the markets when he asked writer Susan Sontag, an Annex regular (pre-brunch!), to sign a petition against NYC zoning changes that could hurt the markets. She signed enthusiastically saying, "They can't do that! The markets are part of the social fabric of New York City!"

Another morning at the markets, Boss thanked famed photographer Bill Cunningham for a mention in The New York Times. As far as Cunningham was concerned, he'd done no favors, just his job as a journalist. "Sonny, I report on style," Cunningham replied, "and this place makes style."
